ELLIOTT'S THE CHOICE ON AYR RAID

ELLIOTT'S THE CHOICE ON AYR RAID

MONDAY'S SELECTIONS:

AYR: 1.30 MAE'S CHOICE (NAP), 2.00 Higgs Boson, 2.35 Lie Forrit, 3.10 What A Dream, 3.40 Abbeybraney, 4.15 Dundock, 4.45 Big Water.

WOLVERHAMPTON: 2.20 Argentine, 2.50 Cloudy Start, 3.25 Unlimited, 3.55 Riverdale, 4.30 Spinning Ridge, 5.00 Bentley, 5.30 Red Shuttle, 6.00 Illustrious Forest.

DOUBLE: Mae's Choice and Red Shuttle.

Gordon Elliott has a tremendous record with his runners in Scotland and Mae's Choice looks banker material in the BetVictor.com Mares' Novices' Hurdle at Ayr.

The Irish trainer is not afraid to cross the water in search of the right opportunities with his string, and this six-year-old has looked above average in her two starts under Rules.

After winning a point-to-point in early December, Mae's Choice turned out just 10 days later in a Downpatrick maiden hurdle where she could not have been more impressive.

She had to give weight to each of her rivals when lining up at Musselburgh next time, but it was nowhere near enough to stop her following up as the six-year-old put her rivals to the sword by nine lengths and more.

The Presenting mare seems to handle any ground and this drop back in distance should not give her too many problems given she looks a different class to her opponents.

Willie Amos has found his pride and joy Lie Forrit the perfect opportunity to secure his second victory over fences in the Best Odds At BetVictor.com Novices' Chase.

The eight-year-old reached a rating in the 150s at his peak over hurdles, so he was always going to make an exciting recruit to the chasing game.

Unfortunately, an injury sustained in the 2010 World Hurdle at Cheltenham halted his career for a long time, but he made a fantastic return from a lengthy absence when scoring on his fencing debut at Kelso in December.

The

re was no disgrace in finishing second to the equally promising Bold Sir Brian at the same circuit next time and given plenty of time to get over those couple of runs, he should prove a potent force at Ayr, a track where he won twice over the smaller obstacles.

Red Shuttle looks the best bet on Wolverhampton's all-weather card as he bids to open his account in The Black Country's Only Racecourse Maiden Stakes.

A no-show in a heavy ground bumper at Warwick offered precious little promise on his debut, but he made giant strides when there was less of an emphasis on stamina over a mile and a half at Lingfield.

Noel Quinlan's five-year-old ran a decent sort in Tappanappa fairly close, and it was notable how he pulled clear of the remainder.

He still looked green that day and average improvement should make him difficult to beat at this level.

Illustrious Forest can take the closing Play Roulette At bluesq.com/casino Handicap, despite a huge rise in the weights.

A big step up in trip on just his second start on an artificial surface saw the four-year-old leave his previous form behind as he made all the running over course and distance, coming home with eight lengths in hand.

The handicapper has not taken any chances by bumping the gelding up a full stone in the handicap, but he might just be up to the task.

EUROPE RULES AT PUNCHESTOWN

Sizing Europe had the layers running scared following his exemplary defeat of Big Zeb in the Boylesports.com Tied Cottage Chase at Punchestown on Sunday.

The reigning Queen Mother Champion Chase hero dismissed the 2010 winner with some contempt on unsuitably heavy ground, causing bookmakers to take evasive action about him retaining his crown next month.

Stan James, for instance, cut Sizing Europe to 5-4 from 2-1 to retain his Cheltenham Festival crown, with Big Zeb out to 7-1 (from 4s).

Andrew Lynch, who has struck up such a wonderful partnership with the 10-year-old, adopted positive tactics aboard Henry de Bromhead's star, whose bold jumping had his big rival in trouble from an early stage.

Despite Big Zeb getting back into contention between the final two fences, he had no answer when Lynch kicked for home two furlongs out.

The 9-10 favourite ran out a 15-length winner over Colm Murphy's charge.

De Bromhead said: "I'm probably only brave enough now to make the running with him - it has taken me six years to let him roll on at his own pace.

"In most of the top races there is plenty of pace on so he didn't need to do that but I said to Andrew to just go out and enjoy himself.

"It is great for Irish racing to have two champions running here and this was a stepping stone for both horses - they are usually so close and I'm sure they'll be a lot closer come Cheltenham."

Murphy believes the heavy ground goes some way to explaining his display.

He said: "Robbie (Power) was never happy with him today - he said he was always niggling just to keep in touch.

"Robbie said he was beat before the first fence. It was always a worry running on that ground, it was proper testing.

"Cheltenham is still the plan."

Other Cheltenham clues were on offer in the Grade Two Racing UK Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle, in which Trifolium ran out an easy winner for Charles Byrnes.

"I'm very happy with that. He prefers better ground, like most horses," said Byrnes.

"He'll probably now go for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham after that."

Cootamundra (14-1) sealed the deal in the Pertemps Handicap Hurdle with a big leap at the last.

John Berry's nine-year-old has been threatening to win for a while and looked like he had just joined in at the second-last as he was travelling so well to give Robbie Moran a first winner since April.

Scotsirish (4-9 favourite) survived a mistake at the last to win the Glenfarclas PP Hogan Memorial Chase for Willie and Patrick Mullins, while the trainer's Allure Of Illusion could only dead-heat with King Vuvuzela (13-2) in the Eadestown GAA & Parish Fair Maiden Hurdle.

Sent off the 1-5 favourite, Ruby Walsh appeared to have everything under control before Paul Nolan's charge stayed on strongly for Power to claim a share of the spoils.

A bad day for Murphy was compounded when odds-on favourite Mister Hotelier was chinned by Morning Assembly (5-1) in the concluding bumper.
TEN IN AGAINST LONG RUN

TEN IN AGAINST LONG RUN

Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Long Run could face up to 10 rivals as he bids to get off the mark for the campaign in the Betfair Denman Chase at Newbury on Saturday.

Nicky Henderson's star stayer looked to have the world at his feet when landing the blue riband of National Hunt racing last spring, but he has had to make do with minor honours behind the resurgent Kauto Star on his two appearances this season.

With Kauto Star now being readied for yet another crack at the Gold Cup, his trainer Paul Nicholls has three potential challengers for Long Run this weekend in the race now named after his retired Gold Cup winner, Denman.

What A Friend, who failed to fire on his only start this season in a hurdle race at Wetherby in October, the enigmatic Tidal Bay, who ran well in the Argento Chase at Cheltenham last time and Aiteen Thirtythree who has disappointed on his last two appearances.

"What A Friend has been trained for two races this year - the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Punchestown Gold Cup. I expect Daryl (Jacob) to ride him in the Gold Cup," said Nicholls.

"He came back really sick from Wetherby but has run well at Newbury before.

"Aiteen Thirtythree will definitely run as Paul (Barber, Denman's) owner wants a runner.

"He has been disappointing and not finishing his races off and will run with a tongue-tie and crossed noseband.

"Tidal Bay ran a really good race in the Argento Chase and was going to go straight for the Gold Cup and then on to Aintree but he came out very fresh and well. We stuck him in the Denman Chase and we'll see what's in it. He might well run."

Henderson could also be represented by Burton Port, not seen in competitive action in well over a year.

Hennessy Gold Cup winner Carruthers, recent Cheltenham scorer The Giant Bolster, Halley, Medermit, Little Josh and Mr Moonshine complete the entries.
OSCAR WHISKY STRAIGHT TO CHELTENHAM

OSCAR WHISKY STRAIGHT TO CHELTENHAM

Owner Dai Walters believes Oscar Whisky could head straight for a mouthwatering clash with Bug Buck's in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Walters, the owner of Ffos Las racecourse, had hoped to see his star performer defend his crown in the Welsh Champion Hurdle at the track on Saturday, but the meeting fell victim to the freezing temperatures.

With the race looking unlikely to be rescheduled, Walters believes opportunities to run the Nicky Henderson-trained gelding between now and the Festival are few and far between.

"It was disappointing the meeting had to be abandoned the other day. The reason we decided to have the Welsh Champion Hurdle in February was because it was a good stepping stone to Cheltenham," said Walters.

"Our next Saturday meeting is on March 17, which is the same week at the Festival, so it won't work out the way we wanted.

"I've spoken to Nicky about where we could run Oscar Whisky. There is the National Spirit Hurdle at Fontwell (February 26), but that is probably too close to Cheltenham.

"I think there's every chance he'll go straight to Cheltenham now and run in the three-mile race."

Oscar Whisky also has a Champion Hurdle entry, a race in which he finished third last year, but he looks set to tackle three-time World Hurdle winner Big Buck's on his first attempt at three miles.

While full of respect for the hot favourite, Walters hopes Oscar Whisky might give him more to think about than anything he has faced so far this season.

"Big Buck's is a great horse, but he hasn't had that many really good horses run against him," Walters added.

"It would be nice to win, but we know it's a difficult task and as we know with horses, anything can happen in the next few weeks. I think Oscar Whisky will stay three miles and I'm looking forward to it."
