WEDNESDAY'S SELECTIONS:

HEREFORD: 1.30 Tour D'Argent, 2.00 Allerton, 2.30 Silver Roque, 3.00 Advisor, 3.30 Budva, 4.00 Rebel Melody, 4.30 Gracey Bella.

KEMPTON: 4.40 Jellicle, 5.10 Queen Of Denmark, 5.40 Ragda, 6.10 My Scat Daddy, 6.40 DARK CASTLE (NAP), 7.10 Sovento, 7.40 Suhayl Star.

LIMERICK: 1.05 Rare Benefit, 1.35 Sir Harry Cash, 2.05 Catleen, 2.35 Dr Proctor, 3.05 Ross Na Righ, 3.35 Jolily, 4.05 Mrs Trair.

LINGFIELD: 12.50 Vale Of Lingfield, 1.20 Sunnyside Tom, 1.50 Tappanappa, 2.20 Woolston Ferry, 2.50 Push Me, 3.20 Celtic Charlie, 3.50 Podgies Boy, 4.20 Jonnie Skull.

MUSSELBURGH: 1.40 Mae's Choice, 2.10 Leopold, 2.40 Absinthe, 3.10 Baaher, 3.40 Red Tanber, 4.10 Spring Lane.

DOUBLE: Dark Castle and Podgies Boy.

Dark Castle looked an animal of potential when losing his maiden tag last time and he can make a successful first foray into handicap company at Kempton.

Sylvester Kirk's charge obviously did not follow his sire Dark Angel's example of being a very forward juvenile, but he can make up for lost time now.

Raced just once at two, Dark Castle ran a bit better than the bare form figure of sixth would suggest as he patently did not enjoy the mile trip that day.

Stepped back to six furlongs at Kempton last time, he really began to shine racing prominently before taking it up two furlongs out and coming home a two-and-a-quarter-length victor.

He travelled well before pulling clear in style and as he beat a 67-rated rival with ease, an initial mark of 74 looks workable.

Jellicle obviously lacks the ability of Grade One-winning half sibling It's Tricky but she should be good enough in the Free Entry For Betdaq Members Maiden Fillies' Stakes.

She failed to hit the mark in four starts for John Gosden as a juvenile, but showed flashes of ability in the process and evidently was not suited by easy conditions on her final outing at Doncaster.

Jellicle disappointed when third as favourite on that last occasion and while she would not merit hefty support, a small wager could be rewarded.

Queen Of Denmark is a fascinating newcomer for Mark Johnston in the Betdaq Multiples Maiden Stakes.

Things have obviously not gone to plan with this filly as she is only now making her debut as a four-year-old, but when you look at her breeding, you can see why connections have persevered.

A daughter of Kingmambo, Queen Of Denmark is a half-sister to former Hong Kong superstar and Dubai Sheema Classic winner Vengeance Of Rain and if she has just a fraction of that kind of talent, she should be pretty smart.

Podgies Boy took some time to find his feet after returning from a lengthy spell off the track but he should be respected in the Exclusive Live Shows At bluesq.com Handicap at Lingfield now he has regained winning form.

A three-time winner as a juvenile, Podgies Boy did not run for all but a year before returning with three so-so efforts at the end of last year.

However, Richard Fahey's runner finally hit his stride at Southwell earlier this month when triumphing off a mark of 73.

The handicapper has been a little harsh in raising him 3lb for that half-length verdict, but Podgies Boy looked as though he might have won a shade cleverly and is one to stay on the right side of.

Red Tanber clearly thrives at Musselburgh and he can make it four wins on the bounce in Scotland in the Bunny Maitland-Carew Handicap Chase.

Up-and-coming claimer Lucy Alexander has struck up a really good partnership with Bruce Mactaggart's nine-year-old, who has proved effective at trips of up to two and a half miles.

Having triumphed off a mark of 79 here last December, he followed up off 88 before defying a further 10lb hike in the ratings when successful nearly two weeks ago.

Raised another 10lb for that cosy verdict, Red Tanber will have to defy a career-high mark but Alexander's 5lb claim could certainly come in useful.

Silver Roque is the choice in the Weatherbys Bank Novices' Handicap Chase at Hereford after his win at Folkestone earlier this month.
GRAND NATIONAL KO FOR OSCAR TIME
GRAND NATIONAL KO FOR OSCAR TIME

Last season's John Smith's Grand National runner-up Oscar Time has been ruled out for the season with a leg injury.

Running in the colours of last year's Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Long Run, the 11-year-old almost gave owner Robert Waley-Cohen and his rider-son Sam a huge double at Aintree last April, but had to make do with the runner-up spot behind Donald McCain's Ballabriggs.

Following a creditable run over hurdles at Thurles in November, trainer Martin Lynch had been looking forward to another crack at the world's most famous steeplechase, but he will now not be making the trip across the Irish Sea.

"It's a big blow but it's not career-threatening and the main thing is he's still in one piece," said Lynch.

"He just has a slight tendon injury. It's nothing huge, but it's enough to keep him out for the season, which is obviously disappointing.

"He'd been in tremendous form since his run over hurdles - even better than he was this time last year if anything.

"He's a horse we've minded during his career so hopefully he'll be back next season."

While refusing to make any concrete plans, Lynch has raised the possibility of the gelding running in next season's Foxhunter Chase at the Cheltenham Festival before another bid for Grand National glory.

"We'll obviously make plans nearer the time, but there's a possibility he could go down the hunter chase route and go to the Cheltenham before he goes back to Aintree. It's all up in the air at the minute," the trainer added.

Robert Waley-Cohen said: "It's unfortunate and it just shows you how difficult it is just to get horse and jockey to the races at the top of their game.

"We were looking forward to running in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse as we wanted to get another run into him before Aintree, but we're going to run out of time.

"He's lightly raced and it's not unheard of for a 12-year-old to win the National, so hopefully he'll still be up to it next year. Fingers crossed."
BABY SHINES AT LEICESTER
BABY SHINES AT LEICESTER

Baby Shine is to be aimed at the EBF Ultima Mares' Only Novices' Hurdle Final at Newbury on March 24 after making a winning debut over jumps at Leicester.

The 9-4 shot overcame an absence of 291 days in the EBF Mares 'National Hunt' Novices' Hurdle.

The three-times bumper winner had been held up by a bout of coughing, but showed she was fit and well with a smooth performance to floor the odds-on Tempest River.

Leighton Aspell was always happy on the Lucy Wadham-trained six-year-old, who scored by a smooth four lengths with A Little Swifter five lengths back in third.

"That went to plan. She's very professional and she'll probably come on for the race. In that ground it's hard work for them out there," said the Newmarket handler.

"The mares' novice hurdle final at Newbury will probably be on the agenda. We might as well make the most of her novice status this year.

"The owners actually own Margot Did so they just might be in Dubai at the wrong time."

Ladbrokes feel Baby Shine may even go to Cheltenham and gave her a 16-1 quote for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle.

Paul Moloney gave credit to the starter after he had ridden Wester Ross (11-2) to victory in the Dick Christian Novices' Chase.

Moloney asked the official to be patient as he was worried his mount might be slowly away.

Wester Ross, trained by Evan Williams, got away with his three rivals and came with a smooth run from the rear to beat Mark Twain by four lengths.

"He's a quirky individual and fair play to the starter. I told him he might be slowly away. He kept a good eye on me and helped me out. Full marks to him," said Moloney.

"It wasn't the best of novice chases and it was a good bit of placing."

Drom defied the steadier of 12st 4lb in meritorious fashion to win for the second time in three days in the Brook Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Chase.

A 7lb penalty for victory at Towcester on Sunday proved no bother to the well-backed 2-1 favourite, who made all the running under Ryan Mahon to defeat Killfinnan Castle by two and a half lengths.

"Th

at might be his last chance in a 0-95 because he'll go up for winning," said trainer Robin Dickin.

"The horse seemed fit and well. He'd eaten everything so we ran him again quickly."

Merry King (15-2) got off the mark over jumps with a gutsy win in the Croxton Park Novices' Hurdle.

The favourite Tarn Hows looked to hold all the aces, but met his match in Richie McLernon's mount, who pulled clear on the run-in to score by six lengths.

"He's improved with every run and the trip has helped him," said trainer Jonjo O'Neill.

"He jumped well and it looked like he'd jump a fence one day."

Tarn Hows' trainer Jennie Candlish gained compensation with Dont Tell Sailor (6-1), who held market leader Toby Belch by two and a quarter lengths in the SIS+ Handicap Chase.

"He's improving but Alan (O'Keeffe) was concerned about the ground. He's handled it and stayed every yard of the trip," said Candlish.

"He's still only a baby and he's due a break but we'll see what the handicapper does. He could be a nice horse for the summer as he goes on good ground."

Top-weight Painter Man (11-4) led three out to bolt up by nine lengths in the Humberstone Handicap Hurdle for trainer David Pipe and jockey Tom Scudamore.

"He's handled the conditions where probably none of the others have," said Scudamore.

"He jumped superbly and was as fit as a fiddle. He's not been an easy horse to train. He might be 10 but he's not had much racing. The owners' patience has been rewarded."

Scudamore could have a high-profile engagement at Cheltenham on Saturday if the exciting novice Grands Crus tests his Gold Cup claims in the Argento Chase.

But he said: "I haven't spoken to David yet about whether he runs. There are other options later on in the novice route.

"We'll concentrate on his next run before we decide what to do.

"I've not sat on him yet but I'll be siting on him this week no doubt."
BINOCULAR CONFIRMED FOR SANDOWN
BINOCULAR CONFIRMED FOR SANDOWN

Nicky Henderson has confirmed that Binocular will run in the Champion Hurdle trial at Sandown next following his breathing op.

Henderson's main brief was to discuss Oscar Whisky's prospects for the William Hill Welsh Champion Hurdle on a press day arranged with Ffos Las, but he did run the rule over most of his other stable stars.

Bobs Worth, beaten by Grands Crus on Boxing Day, and former Champion Hurdle winner Binocular have both been given wind operations.

Henderson is considering the Reynoldstown Novice Chase at Ascot for Bobs Worth, while Binocular will run in a Champion Hurdle trial at Sandown on February 4.

"We did a simple procedure with Binocular as AP McCoy wasn't happy with his wind. He worked this morning and hopefully AP will be back to ride him at Sandown."

Riverside Theatre is scheduled to return in the Ascot Chase while Burton Port and Jack The Giant should be on the course imminently.

The latter will be prepared for the Ryanair Chase while Henderson may be forced to start off Cheltenham Gold Cup entry Burton Port alongside stablemate Long Run in the Denman Chase at Newbury.

There was no news on the progress of Spirit Son, who is ranked as unlikely to take part in the Champion Hurdle after suffering a hitch in his preparation. Grandouet will complete his own preparations in the Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton.

Darlan and Soldatino are intended runners in the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury on February 11.
