GRANDS OPPOSITION KEY TO CRUS
MUSIR STATES WORLD CUP NIGHT CLAIM

Musir put down his marker for Dubai World Cup night success with a cosy victory in the Al Rashidiya Sponsored By Dubai Duty Free on the turf at Meydan.

The Group Two contest was claimed by Presvis last year before going on to success in the Dubai Duty Free, a race which could now be on the radar for the Mike de Kock-trained winner.

Now a six-year-old, Musir is something of a Carnival regular and Christophe Soumillon was well in control turning into the straight.

City Style emerged from the pack to chase him down but he could make little impact as Musir kept finding the necessary extra to win by a length.

Soumillon said: "This is my favourite horse as he gave me my first big wins in Dubai. There was no pace in the race at all and that has suited him as he has such good acceleration.

"We think he is better on grass than (the all-weather) and hopefully a genuine Dubai Duty Free contender."

Ex-Italian runner Marcret made a decent debut for British-based handler Marco Botti in finishing third but Luca Cumani's Presvis could not follow up his 2011 success.

Ryan Moore was not too hard on his mount when it became clear he would not take a hand in the finish on his first start for 249 days.

Kieren Fallon got his day off to a winning start as he employed positive tactics to good effect in the Dubai Duty Free Finest Surprise Handicap.

Partnering Krypton Factor, Fallon steered the ex-Sir Mark Prescott-trained runner to a three-and-a-half-length victory for Fawzi Nass.

The Godolphin team have enjoyed a sound start to the Carnival and African Story notched up another victory in the Dubai Duty Free Foundation Handicap.

Trained by Andre Fabre last season, the Pivotal gelding made a successful debut for Saeed bin Suroor as he came home a length clear of Barbecue Eddie in the hands of Frankie Dettori.

Bin Suroor claimed a double as Quick Wit landed the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships under Silvestre de Sousa.

Sarrsar sported the Godolphin colours in the Dubai Duty Free Millennium Millionaire Handicap but Dettori foiled their bid aboard Capponi.

While the five-year-old is trained by Godolphin handler Mahmood Al Zarooni he runs in the colours of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum.

The pair slugged it out in the final furlong of the nine-furlong heat but Dettori's mount held on by the narrowest of margins.

Dark Matter made it two wins in as many starts at the Carnival in the Dubai Duty Free Handicap.

Successful two weeks ago, he battled hard for jockey Ted Durcan to emerge a short-head winner over Albaasil with Time Prisoner just a neck away in third.

ON HIS OWN CLAIMS THYESTES TRIUMPH
ON HIS OWN CLAIMS THYESTES TRIUMPH

On His Own gave owner Graham Wylie a high-profile Irish success with a brilliant performance in the Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase at Gowran Park.

Wylie has enjoyed plenty of success since he transferred some of his string to Willie Mullins when County Durham handler Howard Johnson was disqualified.

And On His Own (10-1) duly did the business as he powered home in the hands of David Casey, in the process earning a possible tilt at the John Smith's Grand National at Aintree.

He had been brought down on his first run for the Mullins team at Leopardstown last month, but put in a superb display this time.

Leading five fences from home, the eight-year-old pulled steadily clear of the opposition to win by 13 lengths from Tullintain (12-1) with Jadanli (50-1) third and Adams Island (7-1 joint-favourite) fourth.

Mullins and Casey teamed up to land the Thyestes with subsequent Grand National winner Hedgehunter in 2004.

After recording a fourth success in the race, Mullins said: "This horse looks like a real Aintree type in the making, and he may have one more run before the National.

"He disappointed at Leopardstown and had to go out and prove himself today. He got a bad break at Leopardstown, so all I said to David was get him away quick and see what he does.

"David got a fantastic tune out of him as he jumped from fence to fence. He's always been a super sub for us."

"Ruby (Walsh) missed the break today on Shakervilz and Some Target didn't jump great and Quadrillon made several mistakes and was back out at the tail of the field.

"On His Own was the only one of mine up there jumping. He's a big, strong horse and weight means nothing.

Casey, winning the Thyestes for a third time, said: "He jumped like a buck and they went a real good gallop. A light weight helped and I gave him a breather at the top of the hill.

"I looked around at the last and couldn't believe how far I was clear. He's a big, strong horse and, being by Presenting, should be suited by better ground."

Boylesports make On His Own a 20-1 chance for Aintree while Stan James go 25-1.

AP McCOY SECOND ON COMEBACK
AP McCOY SECOND ON COMEBACK

AP McCoy made his return to action on board Key To The West at Warwick but had to settle for second place in the closing Racing UK Intermediate Open NH Flat Race.

The champion jockey had been off the track since a fall from Laudatory at Taunton at the end of last month which left him with cracked ribs and a punctured lung.

Nicky Henderson's five-year-old was sent off the 11/8 favourite but had no chance up the home straight as he chased home impressive winner Ballyalton, who scored unchallenged by 18 lengths.

McCoy said: "I'd feel better if I'd had a winner, he was a bit keen so there you go.

"I've recovered pretty quickly from what happened and I wanted to be back for Cheltenham (at the weekend) and for riding a few horses over the next couple of weeks.

"I'll be riding at Huntingdon tomorrow (Friday) and I will try to build things back up from there."

Henderson added: "He said he felt all right but knowing AP he is hardly going to say anything different."

HUNTINGDON: 1.40 Saves Time, 2.10 Wise Move, 2.40 Clash Duff, 3.10 Oscargo, 3.40 Minella Bliss, 4.10 Kings Bayonet.

LINGFIELD: 1.20 Cliffords Reprieve, 1.50 Flaming Ferrari, 2.20 Illustrious Lad, 2.50 Fishforcompliments, 3.20 Three Bards, 3.50 Roman Strait, 4.20 Wild Sauce.

WOLVERHAMPTON: 4.40 Ebraam, 5.10 Double Carpet, 5.40 Dunmore Boy, 6.10 Spin Cast, 6.40 Strawberrymystique, 7.10 ROSEWOOD LAD (NAP), 7.40 Petomic, 8.10 Love In The Park.

DOUBLE: Rosewood Lad and Wild Sauce.

Oscargo slipped up at Cheltenham last time but he can put the record straight in the Pertemps Handicap Hurdle (Series Qualifier) at Huntingdon on Friday.

Paul Nicholls' runner had previously beaten decent yardstick Kayf Aramis at Cheltenham but he made a bad mistake with a circuit still to run on New Year's Day.

Ruby Walsh was soon unshipped but Oscargo remains a decent prospect.

Finally, Solaise Express is the choice in Fontwell's Racing Welfare Handicap Hurdle.

Rosewood Lad arrested a lengthy losing spell with victory Wolverhampton recently and can follow up in the Blue Square Winter Carnival iPhone App Handicap back at Dunstall Park.

The five-year-old got his head in front earlier this month, scoring his first win since March last year, and a rise of just 2lb does not seem too harsh.

Successful over the extended two miles at Wolverhampton last year, he then endured a mixed year with a couple of decent placed efforts among his results.

Stan Moore gave him a little break over Christmas before sending him back into the fray over the staying trip in the Midlands.

Tackling a competitive heat, the steady pace that day looked to help few of the contenders but after hitting top gear inside the distance, Rosewood Lad kept on gamely to prevail by half a length.

Rosewood Lad certainly seems to thrive at Wolverhampton as each of his three career victories have come at that venue and he looks in the right sort of form to make it four.

Strawberrymystique appeals as an interesting participant in the wolverhampton-racecourse.co.uk Maiden Fillies' Stakes.

Making her debut here as a four-year-old, she is a Motivator half-sister to the high-class Strawberrydaiquiri.

She changed hands for just 7,000 guineas at Tattersalls last autumn but could start to pay her way for Marco Botti with a win on her first attempt.

Wild Sauce can make up for a disappointing effort over six furlongs as she drops back to the minimum trip at Lingfield.

Bryan Smart's filly finished third on two occasions as a juvenile and she was well fancied to make a winning start to 2012 at Wolverhampton.

However, she did not see out the six furlongs and switching back in trip in the Play Rainbow Riches At bluesq.com Handicap should see her return to her best.
