DOUBLE: Qianshan Leader and Captain Chris

Qianshan Leader rates a cracking value punt in the Sky Bet Chase at Doncaster.

Cheltenham Trials Day will rightly generate plenty of buzz with a view to the Festival, but this Grade Three handicap on Town Moor is arguably the most interesting race of the afternoon from a betting perspective.

It is virtually impossible to rule out any of the 16 runners with any degree of confidence - a point emboldened by the absence of ante-post favourite Hold On Julio.

Racing purists may scoff at the notion of Qianshan Leader, trained by the capable Emma Lavelle, winning such an esteemed pot.

After all, the formbook notes he last won a far-from-earth-shattering handicap over this course and distance by just a neck.

Those in attendance that day may beg to differ.

Lavelle's inmate jumped superbly, showing a telling fusion of speed and stamina which can be so crucial in races like this.

Indeed, the runner-up, Benny Be Good, has arguably been underrated all season, such has been his laudable consistency, and is now rated as highly as 157.

Qianshan Leader is also unbeaten in two starts at Doncaster, and, prior to his most recent success, neatly illustrated his aptitude for a speed examination when winning in some style over two and a half miles at Kempton.

To that end, the eight-year-old is clearly in his element competing at a flat, left-handed circuit.

Statistics are often a dangerous, and misguided, weapon, but it has to be of significance that the Sky Bet Chase tends to be claimed by an unexposed horse who is reasonably weighted.

And even though Qianshan Leader races here off an 8lb higher mark, it would be a bit of a turn-up if he did not have enough raw talent to manfully shoulder just 10st 8lb.

Menorah, meanwhile, should be kept onside in the Sky Bet Mobile For iPhone Lightning Novices' Chase.

Although the layers are cool about his Arkle claims, he, too, arrives at Doncaster on the scent of a hat-trick.

That admittedly does not tell the full story as his jumping must improve quite considerably if he is to be considered a big-time player at Cheltenham.

He does, though, possess a similar profile to stablemate Captain Chris, who did not convince everyone of his talents before gliding home in the Arkle.

Defeat here is probably not an option.

Hobbs can enjoy a particularly fine afternoon as the aforementioned Captain Chris is taken to do the business in the Argento Chase at Cheltenham.

It has hardly been a trot to glory this season for him as the nine-year-old unseated Richard Johnson on his return at Huntingdon.

There was also the suspicion he was slightly undercooked at Kempton on Boxing Day - even though he finished third behind Long Run and Kauto Star.

Reports emanating from Minehead are now far more bullish, though, and he could feasibly bolster his Gold Cup claims with a big run here.

The absence of Grands Crus merely heightens the sense of optimism.

Big Buck's is, of course, the headline name on the card, and looks to have a formality in the Rewards4Racing Cleeve Hurdle.

That it not to disparage his rivals, but merely to endorse the brilliance of a horse seeking his 15th win on the spin.

It would be one of the shocks of the season if he suddenly came unstuck at a track which has served him so well over the years.

Licence To Till finished last season with a flourish, and can carry on the good work at the summit of the weights in the lingfieldpark.co.uk Handicap.

Monty's Revenge can make a succesful return after a long absence in the Chemtech Novices' Handicap Chase at Uttoxeter.
DONCASTER CALL SATURDAY CHECK
DONCASTER CALL SATURDAY CHECK

Doncaster's Sky Bet Chase meeting on Saturday is subject to a precautionary 7.45am inspection due to the threat of frost.

Groundstaff have covered vulnerable areas of the course but clerk of the course Jon Pullin is confident that if the forecast is correct the meeting will survive.

"We've covered the take-offs and landings and the other exposed areas," said Pullin.

"It's purely precautionary and most of the forecasts I've seen say it will stay just above freezing. If they are right we'll be fine.

"The worry is they only need to be a couple of degrees out and that's when you need an inspection.

"So to be on the safe side we've called an inspection. I hope we don't need it."

Festival Trials Day does exactly what it says on the tin. For horses and jockeys that is.

Racegoers on the other hand can be lulled into a false sense of security. True, the fantastic action on the track quickens the pulse for what lies ahead in just over six weeks' time, but the day does little else to prepare you for the March bonanza.

The racecourse should employ herds of students to stand at the bars, in the queues for toilets and on the middle of all stairwells to give it an authentic feel.

In their absence we'll make do with a fantastic seven-race card.

There may be no Grands Crus in the Argento but Captain Chris, Diamond Harry or Time For Rupert could conceivably emerge as legitimate contenders for the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Big Buck's bids for a remarkable 15th consecutive victory in the Rewards4Racing Cleeve Hurdle. It will take a brave man to oppose him although Mourad brings the best of the Irish formlines to the party and it will be fascinating to see how Tom Scudamore plays his hand on Dynaste this time.

Potentially the most telling clues on offer will be in the opening JCB Triumph Hurdle Trial with a clear-cut victory for Baby Mix, Grumeti or Hollow Tree certain to see them slashed for the yellow digger-sponsored showpiece back here in March.

Doncaster have a wonderful card too with the Sky Bet Chase and Menorah, Kumbeshwar and Kid Cassidy strutting their stuff in a Lightning Novices' Chase which promises to live up to its name.

But it's south I head, for a Festival trial of my own.

Shoes need breaking in, I have to ensure the Christmas weight-gain doesn' prevent the top button on the shirt earmarked for the Thursday of the Fez from fastening and a new jacket is set for it's eagerly-awaited debut.

And you thought I just turned up and winged it.

As always your input is craved at daveord55@gmail.com . The plan is to up and blogging from the course around 1000 GMT, A1, M18, M42, M5 permitting.

GET OUT OF THE MIRE WITH SHALIMAR

I'msingingtheblues

Running well this season and due to race from a 5lb higher mark in future following his head defeat to Tatenen last Saturday. Placed on his only previous attempt at this trip and has won twice here from just three visits.

Calgary Bay

C&D winner in December 2009 who was winning for the first time since, and fourth time in his career, when scoring at Cheltenham. 6lb higher mark to contend with although the second has run well since to boost the form.

Aiteen Thirtythree

Disappointed when a well-backed favourite for the Hennessy Gold Cup but this highly regarded individual was subsequently found to be suffering from ulcers. Enough weight for what he's achieved but accorded utmost respect.

Wayward Prince

Leading novice who was only beaten a length into third in the RSA Chase before running below that level at Aintree in a first-time visor. Not at his best this season but slipping down the weights and stable enjoying a purple patch.

Shakalakaboomboom

Far surpassed his previous efforts with wins at Punchestown in May and Cheltenham in December. Just 13lbs higher than for the first of those wins and this lightly raced chaser is unbeaten in three starts at around this trip.

Cape Tribulation

One out of six over fences, 10 lengths behind Calgary Bay last time and hasn't always convinced with his jumping. However, he shaped well on his seasonal return, this test should suit and he's potentially well treated on his hurdles form.

Galaxy Rock

A winner of four of his eight starts over fences, including an impressive victory at Cheltenham over 3m 4f in November. Has since got stuck in the mud in the Welsh National but no surprise to see him bounce back on this better ground.

Wymott

Useful and well regarded novice last term who finished sixth in the Hennessy on his return. Has failed to build on that in two subsequent starts and hasn't looked an easy ride but has the ability if the headgear works the oracle.

Fruity O'Rooney

Boasts a good strike rate over fences with four wins from 10 starts and has shown improved form for the fitting of cheekpieces the last twice. Up in the weights and in grade but the headgear could engender further progress.

Qianshan Leader

Struggled to make an impact for much of 2011 but got his act together at the end of the year with wins at Kempton and over C&D. All out on the latter occasion and has an 8lb rise to contend with but on an upward curve.

Merigo

2010 Scottish Grand National hero who came within three quarters of a length of recording a famous double in April of last year. Likelihood that that contest is his ultimate aim again this season but has dropped to a dangerous mark.

Shalimar Fromentro

Hasn't enjoyed a smooth run since finishing a half length second to Wymott and beating Fruity O'Rooney in 2010/11. Still in contention when falling in the Becher and surprising if this unexposed youngster hasn't got more to offer.

Nikola

Strong travelling and generally consistent sort whose record of three wins and 12 seconds in 35 starts over fences tells its own story. Ran better than the bare form suggests at Cheltenham last time but vulnerable in this company.

Riguez Dancer

Useful sort who is racing from a fair mark and who has made the frame on both previous visits here. Taken a while to find his form this term but hinted at better to come latest although stamina to prove on his first run beyond 2m 4f.

Osric

Gradually progressive over hurdles and got his chasing career off to a good start but has since lost his way, albeit in competitive company. This is hardly any easier however and hopes seems to rely on sliding mark and longer trip.

Carrickmines

Twice a winner over hurdles this season and not disgraced back over fences last time but appears to face a tough task in this company racing from 2lb out of the handicap despite the good form of his yard.

Summary

A good turn out numerically for this valuable prize but it hasn't paid to look beyond those priced in single figures in recent renewals and it's hard to get away from those towards the head of the market.

It would be no great surprise to see Aiteen Thirtythree finally live up to his tall reputation in a race that Paul Nicholls took with another National hope in Big Fella Thanks.

Shakalakaboomboom and Galaxy Rock are others for the short-list but a chance is taken on the unexposed Shalimar Fromentro whose shrewd yard places their horses well.

He was in the process of running a big race over Aintree's National fences when falling and looks more than capable of winning a decent prize from his current mark and providing his up and coming French sire with another high-profile winner.

WEIGHTY BURDEN FOR POQUELIN
WEIGHTY BURDEN FOR POQUELIN

Owner Andy Stewart fears Poquelin faces a tough task off top weight in Saturday's Murphy Group Chase at Cheltenham.

The nine-year-old has been a great servant to Stewart and Paul Nicholls down the years, with his last five wins all coming at the home of National Hunt racing.

He failed to stay three miles in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby and his high rating means life in handicaps is tough for him, so another crack at the Ryanair, in which he has finished second and fourth for the last two years, is on the cards again.

"I was very keen to run him in the Atlantic4 Gold Cup for obvious reasons (he sponsored it) but he met with a late setback," said Stewart.

"We need to find out if he's still good enough to win a Ryanair, he finished second in it two years ago to Albertas Run and there's every chance he (Albertas Run) might be running the Gold Cup this year rather than going for the hat-trick.

"Ruby (Walsh) has decided to ride Aerial who looks to be improving and we've got top weight, although Harry Derham is talking off a useful 7lb.

"It's going to be tough but we know he likes the track so we'll see what happens."

Tom George runs Tartak, and the Slad trainer said: "He's had a wind operation so we're hoping for a better showing (then in the Peterborough Chase).

"He's not run for a long time and he can be rusty on his first run back after a break. It's his jumping more than anything that seems to improve as the season goes on.

"I've no doubt he'll improve for the run as his best race last year wasn't until Aintree in April.

"He'll run in this and then again in a couple of weeks, possibly at Newbury in the Denman Chase. It's likely to be a small field with Long Run going there. After that he'll run at the Festival."
